“But it was my Twinkie,” Buster complained. “I just brought it for her.”

“No problem,” Frank said. “Twinkies make you fat, and the witch loves

fat boys.”

Buster whimpered. “We’ll give you one more chance,” Frank said, “but

you need to do better next week.”

They let Buster go. Next, it was Butch’s turn. “Well?” Frank asked.

Butch, the always Mr. Smart, had cut open the Ding-Dongs and eaten out the

cream filling. His bag contained only the outer cake part.

“What did you do to my... I mean, the witch’s Ding-Dong?” Frank

demanded.

“I ate the cream filling,” Butch said.

“I can see you ate the cream filling!” Frank exclaimed. “What I want to

know is why!”

“Well, I thought a witch probably wouldn’t like the cream filling,” Butch

said.

“Well, you thought wrong!” Frank hollered.

I looked over at Butch and could see the whole front of his pants was

almost instantly yellow.

“We better hang onto him for a minute while we decide what to do,”

Frank growled.

I was brought up next. Frank looked me over. “I hope you can do better

than the other two.”

I pulled the bag of cookie crumbs from my pocket.

Frank was skeptical “But it’s just crumbs.”

“I took out the raisins,” I told him.

Frank scowled. “You took out the raisins and brought us a bunch of

crumbs? That will impress the witch.”

“But I also brought some homemade bread,” I quickly added.

Frank nodded. “Homemade bread would be good.”

I pulled the bread out of my pocket, but to my horror it was smashed flat.

In the unfortunate crushing I had received on the church pew, when I got steam rolled by Mrs. Giant Woman, it had been mashed into a doughy ball, and it looked terrible.

“This is the best you can do?” Frank asked.

“I had to give up part of my dinner for this,” I replied.

“Oh, our hearts are bleeding for you,” Frank scoffed.

“Well, I’m not afraid of any old witch,” I answered bravely, “and I think

you’re just a big jerk.”

Frank’s face flushed red. “Oh, yeah? Well, then, you can be the first to

meet the witch. Bring him forward!”

As the boy holding me brought me toward the door, I slammed my foot

down hard on his and, with all of my strength, I kicked him in the shin. His grip loosened just enough so that I could jerk free. I took off as fast as I could run, and I heard Frank yell, “Get him!”

I figured that if I could just get to the front of the church, I could probably get in among the grownups and be safe. But just as I came around the first corner, I ran into someone, or something, and Frank and the guy who’d been holding me 71

plowed into my back.

I looked up, and I saw a silhouette against the moon that I knew had to be

a werewolf. I froze, unable to run further. The werewolf’s voice boomed out.

“Frank, what’s going on here?”

“Uh, nothing, Dad,” Frank said quietly.

“He was planning on feeding us to the witch,” I said.

“The witch?” Mr. Angstrom asked. “What witch?”

“The one that lives in the little green building behind the church,” I

answered.
